  • Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are specialized mental health professionals trained in psychotherapy and family systems theory. This means they understand how relationships and family dynamics influence individual well-being.

LMFTs are licensed to diagnose and treat mental and emotional health challenges within the context of couples, families, and individual clients. They work with a diverse range of people, including children, adolescents, couples, families, and individuals.

MFTs address a wide variety of issues such as depression, anxiety, marital conflict, child-parent struggles, and individual psychological concerns. Their holistic approach focuses not just on symptoms but on improving the overall long-term health of individuals and their relationships.

  • The initial consultation offers a 15–20 minute meeting to help you and the provider determine if you’re a good fit before scheduling therapy sessions. It also allows the provider to assess whether your needs fall within their scope of practice.

This time is yours to ask questions and share your background, goals, and concerns—helping the therapist understand how best to support you.

  • Breaking Barriers does not accept insurance and is considered an out-of-network provider. Upon request, I can provide an itemized invoice called a “superbill” for services rendered, which you may submit to your insurance company for potential reimbursement. It is your responsibility to verify your out-of-network benefits with your insurance provider before your appointment.

    Please note:

    • I do not accept insurance payments directly, nor do I submit or negotiate claims on your behalf.

    • I cannot determine if your insurance plan will reimburse you for services.

    • Insurance companies require a mental health diagnosis to process reimbursement claims.

Before your appointment, consider calling your insurance company to ask:

    1. What is the reimbursement rate for out-of-network providers? Will they cover services by an LMFT?

    2. Is a referral or approval from a primary care physician needed for mental health services?

    3. How many outpatient mental health sessions are covered annually?

    4. What is my deductible, and has it been met?

    5. Are telemental health services covered?

    Important:
Most insurance plans do not reimburse for couples or marriage therapy. Clarify with your insurance if they cover diagnosis “Z codes” (often used for couples/family therapy). Individual therapy diagnoses usually start with “F” (e.g., major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder). Many insurance plans exclude Z codes, meaning couples and family therapy are generally not covered.
